Hello, Eavesdropppers! This week is a mystery mash-up, starting with an Australian true-crime mystery that has twists, turns and – SPOILER ALERT – no conclusions…
On September 23 in 1986, the brutal murder of 23 year old Beth Barnard shook the small community of Phillip Island off the coast of Victoria in Australia. It was an open secret that Beth was having an affair with local farmer and entrepreneur Fergus Cameron, and it came as no surprise that prime suspect number one was Fergus’s wife Vivienne. Except on the night of Beth’s murder, Vivienne and Fergus were involved in a number of strange situations and since then, no one has ever seen Vivienne alive again… What happened to Beth? Where is Vivienne? Did Vivienne kill Beth? Is there something else going on here? Listen now to Geordie discussing this Australian murder mystery.
Michelle then goes off-piste with a medical mystery that baffled doctors and courts and almost resulted in a woman losing her children… In 2002, mother of two Lydia Fairchild had split from her long-term partner. To get social welfare, she and her kids and ex-partner had to undergo DNA testing… and it didn’t go well for Lydia. Turns out she had no DNA connection to her kids and it didn’t take long for courts to begin criminal proceedings against her for fraud, a possible surrogacy scam and identity theft. But Lydia pushed these kids out of her birth canal and knew she was the biological mother. What was going on? How could this happen? Listen now to find out!

Eavesdroppers! It’s that time of the year when plastic skeletons fly out of cupboards, pumpkins somehow become evil and scary, and kids get an excuse to eat their body weight in sweets… Yes, it’s HALLOWEEN and we’ve got some spooky stories for you, kicking off with Geordie’s deep dive into a story that terrified the world, or at least New York…
On the night before Halloween in 1938, New York’s CBS Radio station aired a drama by HG Wells that not only scared the bejesus out of a city, it caused mass hysteria and panic. Yes, we’re talking about War Of The Worlds, that classic tale of a martians invading Earth and taking over our planet. What happened to cause people to panic? Why were police raiding a radio station? And what has Orson Welles got to do with it? You’ll have to listen if you want to know more!
Michelle then talks about three true crime horror stories that will lead you to think monsters are real… When Timothy O’Bryan went trick or treating on Halloween in 1974, he was thrilled to be handed his favourite candy. But things didn’t go well for Timothy… Find out who poisoned the Pixy Stix and why Ronald Clark O’Bryan has been dubbed The Candyman Killer. Michelle then discusses the case of Marvin and Ethel Brandland and what happened to them on Halloween night in 1982 when a trick or treater with a pillowcase over their head knocked on their door. Hint: it didn’t go well. And finally, Michelle wraps up the episode with a Halloween House of Horrors case from 2004 where she asks the question: who killed Leslie Mazzara and Adriane Insogna? On July 6 1993, Mia Zapata, who was the talented lead singer of a Seattle band called The Gits, had been out drinking with mates. She’d had a lot of drinks, had gone over to her mate’s place before heading off into the night… Hours later her lifeless body was found in a Christ pose in Seattle’s red-light district with no clues as to her killer. What happened to Mia? How did it affect Seattle’s tight-knit music scene? And was the murderer ever found? Listen now to find out!
Michelle then talks about what happened to Hollywood actor Johnny Lewis. What the actual! We made it to 100 episodes! Happy Birthday to us! Who’d have thought that when we started back in November 2020 that we’d still be here, swearing up a storm talking about all things real life, true crime and supernatural!!

Geordie then talks about an incredible chapter in British history where, in response to people having vivid premonitions ahead of the Aberfan coal-mining town disaster in 1966, a psychiatrist called John Barker set up the now defunct British Premonitions Bureau. Could the Aberfan disaster have been averted? Did people really have foreboding visions and predictions of what was about to happen? How amazing is it that John Barker set up a British databank for all the nations dreams and visions to help prevent national disasters!
